According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, the crash occurred around 5:58 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 28, in the southbound lanes of the Palisades Interstate Parkway near Alpine, New Jersey.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find one occupant fatally injured, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Several other individuals from the vehicles were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries.
The Bergen County Fatal Accident Task Force has been activated, and a joint investigation is underway between the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit and the Palisades Interstate Parkway Police Department.
Authorities have not yet released details on the identities of the victims or the possible cause of the crash. Detours remain in place as the investigation continues.
As previously reported, the crash completely shut down all lanes in both directions near Exit 5B (NY-303) in Orangetown, NY, around mile marker 10.9. Authorities have urged drivers to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. The highway remained closed as of 1:15 p.m.
